The Lethal Triad of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), Cardiorespiratory Disease, and Cardiac Surgery Under Cardiopulmonary Bypass | Chapter 17 | New Horizons in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 3

 The pandemic of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has created unique problems to health-care practitioners involved in cardiac sciences, particularly cardiac surgeons. Patients with underlying cardiovascular illness share the risk factors linked to increased COVID-19 mortality, making them particularly vulnerable to the lethal manifestation of COVID-19. This, together with the possible negative effects of cardiopulmonary bypass and cardiac surgery on heart and lung dynamics, could have a synergistic negative effect on the cardiorespiratory system. All cardiac surgeons must pay close attention to these three crucial criteria, which, when present in combination, might have a negative impact on surgical results.
