Adsorption Behavior of Acid-Leached Clays in Bleaching of Oil: A Descriptive Study | Chapter 02 | Current Topics on Chemistry and Biochemistry Vol. 1

The goal of this work was to characterise the bleaching of oils by examining the type of adsorptive processes that occur during the bleaching of vegetable oils using clays. According to the existing evidence, acid-leached clays had sites for adsorption of contaminants in oils. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms for residual contaminants in cotton and sunflower-seed oils bleached with the identical clay ingredients were linear. Increases in both the temperature of thermal activation and the concentration of acid used to leach the clay resulted in a rise in the constant, k, implying that bleaching efficiency improved. The value of n decreased as the temperature of activation and the acid concentration used to leach the clay increased, indicating that the bleaching capacity of the clay increased. Clays' surface, structural, and bleaching qualities were influenced by their mineral compositions.
