Study about Cancer and Potential Death: Updated Role of Mindfulness | Chapter 06 | New Horizons in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 5

Patients with chronic progressive diseases, such as cancer, must face the reality of loss on a daily basis as their health worsens, as therapies and side effects take their toll, and death becomes a possibility. Mindfulness-based stress reduction is one strategy that has shown potential in the combined fields of thanatology (death) and cancer. The goal of this article is to provide an update on mindfulness interventions for cancer patients who are dealing with death and loss-related issues. A wealth of cancer research show that it is useful in delivering positive outcomes, such as reduced stress, anxiety, and other symptoms. While recent research has expanded the use of mindfulness interventions to include loved ones and caregivers of cancer patients, more research is needed for the terminally ill, where disease and death, loss, and grieving converge.
