A Case Report on Gastroduodenal Strongyloidiasis Causing Protein Losing Enteropathy | Chapter 11 | New Horizons in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 5

Strongyloidiasis is a contagious disease with a complex life cycle that infects humans through the skin. We talk about a 46-year-old woman who came in with stomach pain and distention. She was taking a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) for recurrent gastritis. She also talks about how she uses steroid to treat joint discomfort. An abdominal USG indicated substantial ascites. Endoscopy of the upper gastrointestinal tract revealed edematous duodenal mucosa with patchy erythema, as well as diffuse erythematous gastric mucosa with a minor mosaic pattern. During a histological examination of a gastric sample, Strongyloides stercoralis was discovered infected in the stomach mucosal glands. The patient was completely recovered after a course of antihelmintic treatment. This is a case report of gastroduodenal strongyloidiasis with abdominal discomfort and ascites as the presenting symptoms.
