Pathological Unit for Specific New Mucinous Benign Pancreatic Cysts | Chapter 21 | Highlights on Medicine and Medical Science Vol. 15

Introduction: Pancreatic cystic lesions contain a wide range of diseases that can be divided into neoplastic and non-neoplastic cysts. Mucinous non-neoplastic cyst (MNC) is a new non-neoplastic cystic lesion that has recently been reported.

Materials and Procedures: Imaging (ultrasound and CT) as well as invasive techniques were used to assess the diagnosis histologically. Eleven pancreatic cystic lesions were described, all of which were detected by ultrasonography and computed tomography while they were being employed for other purposes.

Discussion and Conclusions: In the body of the pancreas, a 26-33 mm cyst was identified, which appeared to communicate with the pancreatic duct. Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography, as well as liver function, serum CEA, and carbohydrate antigen C19 -9 laboratory tests, were all normal. Following a distal pancreatectomy, six patients developed a simple cyst bordered with mucinous epithelium. The other five examples have remained the same size and structure after two years of observation.

Conclusion: Because it is impossible to be certain that the lesions are benign, we urge that individuals diagnosed with a 'benign' mucinous neoplasm be constantly watched. Furthermore, the MNC's status as a true one-of-a-kind cystic lesion is questionable.
