Quantitative Analysis of Chemical Warfare Agents by GC/MS Method | Chapter 1 | Current Topics on Chemistry and Biochemistry Vol. 2

The main mission of special chemical labs of the Fire and Rescue Service in the Czech Republic is to analyse hazardous chemical compounds (FRS). The main criteria and requirements for an internal standard for determining chemical warfare agents (CWAs) utilising the gas chromatography coupled with mass detection (GC/MS) technique were defined. The goal of the project was to determine CWAs on all FRS GC/MS systems that lacked CWA guidelines. A GC/MS analysis of a combination of a CWA and an internal standard, conversion of the total ion current (TIC) chromatogram to extracted-ion chromatogram at a certain m/z ratio, and computation of the CWA concentration from the internal standard concentration are used to make the determination. chromatographic peak regions and response factor Internal standards were identified and confirmed for seven organophosphorus nerve-paralyzing chemicals and four blister agents. The related response factors were calculated using the gradients of the linear functions of peak area and compound concentration. The linearity, repeatability, and accuracy of the measurements were evaluated.
