Assessment of Radioactive Pollution in Soil Samples from South of Basra Province | Chapter 6 | Research Developments in Science and Technology Vol. 7

For radioactive contamination research, soil samples were collected from a range of places in the south of Basra province, a total of (7) locations in the region.

The Gamma Counter Multichannel Analyzer and the LB 1200 nuclear particle detector equipment were used to measure the radioactive contamination levels of Gamma ray, Alpha (), and Beta () nuclear particles in these samples. An OLYMPUS Optical Microscope was used to examine these samples under the microscope.

According to the findings, the acquired samples were contaminated with Uranium to varying degrees. The greatest amount of radioactive contamination was determined to be 18 10-3 mRm/h in the Basra area to the south. These samples' isotopes of Uranium decayed to Th234, Ra226 and Bi214, with values of 8.7, 5.1, and 3.2 Bq/Kg, respectively.

The diameters of the uncontaminated and uranium-contaminated grain samples, determined microscopically, are (75 and 550 µm, respectively).
