Coronaviruses are an RNA virus family that causes illness in both animals and humans. While fighting viruses, the immune system kills and damages its own respiratory cells, resulting in serious consequences such as lymph and mucus collection in the lungs and shortness of breath. Patients with a weakened immune system and milder symptoms have a better chance of surviving. Why is SARS-CoV-2 so dangerous to the elderly and individuals with long-term chronic illnesses?
