Aerobic and anaerobic treatments can reduce wastewater's oxygen consumption. Activated sludge, trickling filters, and advanced oxidation processes are examples of aerobic treatments. Aerobic systems have higher initial expenses for aeration equipment, as well as higher operational and maintenance costs. For sewage treatment, anaerobic treatments have a number of advantages. Up flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors are one of the most essential treatment technologies. This approach has high conversion rates and is cost-effective. In addition, a high percentage of methane in the generated gas adds value. Anaerobic technologies have the advantage of a smaller reactor size and less biomass output. Anaerobic treatment is harmed by the presence of oil and grease. Anaerobic therapies are best for very high organic loading, while aerobic treatments are best for modest organic loading. This chapter delves into the research and studies that have been conducted on these treatments.
