An Overview on the Biomimetic Applications in Restorative Dentistry | Chapter 7 | Recent Developments in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 15

The primary goal of dental restoration is to return original enamel and dentinal lesions to their natural state of mineralization. The research supports the majority of restorative materials and remineralization adjuvants for enamel and dentin. Although commercially available restorative materials have superior aesthetics, mechanical properties, and cost effectiveness, the restorations' durability is frequently jeopardised by insufficient strength, long-term solubility, weaker adhesion to tooth structure, and accelerated decay after bonding. Biomimetic science's role in restorative dentistry has recently expanded to include the creation of restorations that are highly compatible with the structural, functional, and biologic properties of dental tissues in order to reproduce and emulate the original performance of the intact tooth with high durability. Non-collagenous protein analogues have been proposed as templates for apatite deposition in order to restore the prismatic structure in mineral-depleted enamel and achieve interfibrillar mineralization in dentin. To establish functional mineralization and restore the dynamic mechanical properties of teeth, biomimetic counterparts must be used. The use of these analogues in combination with ion-releasing materials appears to be a potential technique for remineralization of both enamel and dentin. The goal of this study is to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state and future prospects of biomimetic analogues utilised for enamel and dentin remineralization, as practical translation of biomimetic research can be a boon to restorative dentistry.
