Serrated Polyps of the Colon and Rectum: Clinicopathological Features | Chapter 11 | Highlights on Medicine and Medical Science Vol. 4

The serrated neoplasia pathway, in which serrated polyps develop into colorectal cancer, has piqued the interest of researchers in recent years as a novel carcinogenic process. Histopathologically, colorectal serrated polyps are classified as hyperplastic polyps (HPs), sessile serrated lesions, and classic serrated adenomas; the latter two are considered premalignant in the serrated neoplasia pathway. In Western countries, all colorectal polyps, including serrated polyps, are removed except for the diminutive rectosigmoid HPs. In Asian countries, however, there is no established treatment strategy for colorectal serrated polyps.
