Review of Achievements of E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute in Development of Equipment for Electron Beam Welding | Chapter 8 | New Approaches in Engineering Research Vol. 7

Over the last two decades, the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute has designed and manufactured a large number of “general-purpose” machines for EBW, which are used to weld a variety of goods made of various materials. According to the welding chamber volume and hence the probable sizes of welded products, all of these machines can be loosely grouped into four types: "small," "medium," "large," and "extra large." The essay briefly discusses their specificity. The machines are equipped with a modern 60 kV welding power source with a power range of 6... 60 kW, depending on the welded materials and thicknesses. In most cases, all machines are Completed with the “RASTR-6” secondary-emission electron visualisation system, which is inextricably linked to the welding power source. It communicates with a modern control system. The welding process is influenced by a piece of equipment that is under continuous programme control. The high-level software control paradigm is utilised, in which the user interacts with the equipment solely through a Windows-oriented graphical user interface. There are two fundamental setups of the numerical control system for EBW machines. The first employs the Sinumerik 840Dsl comprehensive industrial system, while the second uses the Synamics S120 “short-cut” industrial system. In both cases, two industrial buses, CAN and ProfiBUS, are used to communicate between control programmes and executive equipment. In both cases, two industrial buses, CAN and ProfiBUS, are used to communicate between control programmes and executive equipment.
