Small supernumerary marker chromosomes (sSMCs) are structurally abnormal chromosomes that are the same size or smaller than chromosome 20, and they can be identified or characterised using standard karyotype analysis. This paper describes the molecular characterisation of sSMCs derived from chromosome 15 in prenatal diagnosis in a 38-year-old female. A detailed ultrasound examination combined with karyotype analysis can provide a more precise and rapid prenatal diagnosis of sSMCs.
