An Innovative Approach for Wastewater Management Using Staged Onsite Wastewater Treatment System Positioned on Environmental Floors of Multi-Storey Building | Chapter 2 | Challenging Issues on Environment and Earth Science Vol. 4

 About 30% of the existing wastewater treatment systems in Indian housing societies are found to be non-functional, and when statistics on their operating efficiency are examined, a massive cost is associated with their operation and maintenance. To address these issues, treatment systems that are on-site, cost-effective, and self-sustaining are required, delivering chemical-free treated effluent that is completely harmless to nature and residents. DOSIWAM (decentralized onsite integrated waste management system) operates naturally, is relatively simple, and can be designed to provide low-cost services. Sanitation and environmental protection, with added benefits from water reuse and biogas. In the current study, effective positioning and modeling of a non-mechanized, gravity-governed wastewater treatment system are carried out at the refuge floor, which has been coined to be proposed as the “environmental floor” for a G+32 storeyed residential building. A comparative analytical analysis for structural and seismic response of both structures (with and without environmental floors) is performed to assess the viability of the treatment system and quantify the benefits it provides. According to the obtained results, the behavioral response of the structures studied clearly states that the locations DOSIWAM is risk-free. The system would be effective in urban areas with minor changes in design and construction, particularly for multi-story buildings.
