Green Methods for Extraction of Polysaccharides from the Fruits of Pithecellobium dulce | Chapter 15 | Current Advances in Chemistry and Biochemistry Vol. 6

A study was carried out in order to develop rapid, simple microwave assisted extraction (MAE) methods for the extraction of polysaccharide from Pithecellobium dulce pods using fundamental principles of “green” chemistry. The plant is said to be used as a folk remedy for ear and toothache. In folk medicine, it is also used as an emollient, anodyne, and larvicidal. Because the fruit is popular among the general public throughout the country, particularly among Vellore residents, a scientific investigation into the edible part of the plant was launched in our laboratory. The use of modern technologies to optimize extraction procedures reduces the amount of solvent consumed and waste generated significantly. In our lab, we demonstrate (MASE). The contribution of the quadratic model to the responses was significant, according to the analysis of variance. The extraction yield of crude polysaccharides was 63.7 percent under optimal conditions. The combined experimental model (MASE) with 20% alcohol as the extracting solvent resulted in a yield of 72.8 percent. This chapter describes a systematic approach to optimizing an extraction procedure for the isolation of potential polysaccharides from plant sources. The extracts were evaluated for total polysaccharide content, total phenolic content, and total flavonoid content, and the quantitative analysis was correlated with the methods established.
