Assessment of Type and Severity of Tooth Wear in Geriatric Patients: A Clinical Survey | Chapter 9 | Highlights on Medicine and Medical Science Vol. 5

In the dental literature, there has been a growing interest in tooth wear. Tooth wear is common in all dentitions. The number of elderly people experiencing problems with tooth wear is growing. A clinical survey was conducted in Geriatric patients to assess the type and severity of tooth wear. A total of 148 patents were surveyed, with 128 men and 40 women ranging in age from 60 to 80 years. A questionnaire was used to record the history. Based on the responses to all of these questions, the patients were assigned to one of the etiological categories listed below. To determine the type of tooth wear, attrition, abrasion, erosion, a combination of tooth wear, and a clinical examination were performed. Out of 148 patients, 148 had complete tooth wear, 129 had attrition, 14 had abrasion, 5 had erosion, and 82 had a combination of tooth wear. 62 patients received a Grade I, 38 patients received a Grade II, 28 patients received a Grade III, and three patients received a Grade IV. It is critical to understand the epidemiological survey of tooth wear in geriatric patients in the Indian population.
