Using Biotechnological Approaches for Virus Elimination in Sweet Potato: A Review| Chapter 7 | Cutting-edge Research in Agricultural Sciences Vol. 11

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) is a Convolvulaceae family plant that is important for food security. Sweet potato is susceptible to a variety of pathogen infections. Among these, viral diseases are the most significant constraints to sweet potato production because viruses can accumulate and be passed down from generation to generation through the use of infected storage roots for vegetative propagation. There are over 30 viruses known to infect sweet potato around the world, and many of them have been reported in the United States, causing devastating yield losses.

To fully realize the potential of this crop, meristem-tip culture-based biotechnology has been used in the United States to produce virus-indexed propagating material. This review attempts to evaluate methodology for detecting and identifying sweet potato viruses, as well as current biotechnological approaches for virus elimination and disease management. We also discuss potential concerns and challenges for the sweet potato industry.
