Solving Transportation and Travelling Salesman Problems in Excel Environment | Chapter 7 | Advanced Aspects of Engineering Research Vol. 15

Traffic congestion, air and noise pollution, social issues, and other issues are all caused by urban traffic in city settings. The chapter discusses solutions to two major transportation issues: products distribution and travelling salesman challenges, both of which are used in an urban setting. The resolution of such issues leads to an improvement in transportation service management. A mixed integer-linear programming problem is used to formalise the distribution problem. The design of acceptable numerical methods for the solution of the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) has a lengthy history. It belongs to a class of combinatorial optimization problems that require a significant amount of computer effort to solve. The study's added value is that it shows how these two challenges can be solved using a widely available software suite. The real transportation issues in Sofia have been identified. It is demonstrated how these issues can be easily solved in an Excel setting. The Excel sheet and its software application Solver are programmed properly. This work includes examples of how to define a transportation problem for commodities distribution and TSP one, as well as their solutions.
