Middle Mesial Canal an Extra Entity: A Case Report | Chapter 16 | Highlights on Medicine and Medical Science Vol. 3

After proper biomechanical preparation of the pulp chambers, the primary goal of endodontic therapy is to achieve three-dimensional obturation of the root canal space to remove tissue debris, microorganisms, and their byproducts. Endodontic failure is frequently caused by a missing canal in a complex root canal morphology. The use of magnification, illumination, new advancements, diagnostic aids, and techniques all help to reduce the likelihood of missing a canal. This case report describes the unusual management of a first permanent molar on the left mandibular side that required root canal treatment with an additional Middle Mesial Canal (MMC) in the mesial root. Clinicians' experience and approach are critical in negotiating and managing these abnormal canal configurations. After properly preparing the access cavity, clinicians should spend time examining the mesial subpulpal groove to detect and negotiate additional canals.
