Mucoadhesive drug delivery systems have emerged as a unique novel drug delivery system in the modern scenario, owing to the current advent of Novel Drug Delivery Systems. In the area of Novel Drug Delivery Systems, the mucosal or mucoadhesive drug delivery system plays an important role as a revolutionary drug delivery system. In a more simplified sense, mucoadhesion refers to the adhesion of two materials to each other, one of which is the mucosal surface. Certain studies are underway to discover an alternative route that can circumvent hepatic metabolism, minimise dose frequency, and extend the duration of drug action. In those situations, drug delivery through the buccal cavity may be included in the real picture. Solids, semisolids, and clear drug-loaded films are among the dosage types of mucoadhesive drug delivery systems. As this comes into contact with the buccal mucous membrane, the drug continues to release in a sustained and regulated manner through the blood capillaries associated with the buccal cavity, ensuring optimum bioavailability and making drug administration easier. Increases treatment efficacy, improves patient compliance, and reduces dosage frequencies by bypassing hepatic portal systems and the gastrointestinal tract. Owing to the influx of new drug molecules as a result of drug development, mucoadhesive drug delivery will become much more critical in delivering these molecules.
