Aims : The aim of this study was to investigate the phytochemical properties of the n-butanol soluble fraction of Indigofera hirsuta aerial parts and to assess the fraction's anti-inflammatory behaviour using laboratory animal models.
Study Design: Isolation and elucidation of bioactive substances, as well as anti-inflammatory activity testing on the soluble fraction of n-butanol.Place and Duration of Study: Department of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, and period of study: Between January and October of 2011, the research was done.
Methodology: Various spectroscopic techniques were used to identify the compounds isolated. In a rat model, the influence of the n-butanol fraction on carrageenan-induced oedema was investigated.
Results : Two flavonol glycosides, Kaempferol-3-O—D-glucopyranoside (T2) and Kaempferol-7-O—D-glucopyranoside (T3), were isolated (Q3). At doses of 150 and 300 mg/kg measured, the fraction significantly (P =.05) prevented carrageenan-induced paw oedema. The highest dose tested (300 mg/kg) had a higher percentage anti-inflammatory effect at the peak hour than ketoprofen (10 mg/kg), the normal anti-inflammatory agent.
Conclusion: This study's findings indicate that the n-butanol soluble fraction of Indigofera hirsuta aerial parts contains anti-inflammatory bioactive compounds.
