Background: In 2004, the World Health Organization classified Nested Variant of Urothelial Carcinoma as a new variant.
The aim of this study was to conduct a literature review on the nested variant of urothelial carcinoma.
The following are the outcomes: So far, about 200 cases of
Nested variant urothelial carcinoma have been identified, with the tumour
exhibiting the following morphological characteristics: The lamina propria and
the muscularis propria are infiltrated by large numbers of small confluent
irregular nests of bland-appearing, tightly packed, haphazardly organised,
poorly defined urothelial cells.
Because of its bland appearance, the tumour has been misdiagnosed as a benign
lesion on occasion, causing a substantial delay in determining the correct
diagnosis and leading to the disease's advanced stage.
The tumour shares certain immunohistochemical characteristics with high-risk traditional urothelial carcinomas, such as a high proliferation index and the loss of p27 expression. Immunoreactivity to p53, bcl-2, or EGF-r, on the other hand, is rare.
The tumour must be distinguished from a variety of urothelial proliferative lesions. Conclusions: A correct and early diagnosis of this tumour is critical for providing early curative care and avoiding a diagnosis at a later point. To find treatment options that will improve the outcome of this tumour, a multi-center trial is required.
