Depression is a major issue in today's culture. It can have a negative
impact on people in a variety of ways. Despite the efforts of many scientists
to find effective ways to cope with depression, no final conclusions have been
reached. This research uses data from the China Health and Retirement
Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) to show that internet usage among older Chinese
people (aged 45 and up) helps to alleviate depression symptoms. Combining this
finding with China's increasingly increasing smartphone usage, it appears that
developing specially designed APPs for older people to use smart phones might
aid in the fight against depression in the country.
