Historical Aspects of Neurosurgery in Sudan, Prof. Abusalih as the Pioneer of Evolution | Chapter 4 | Advanced Concepts in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 1

 Introduction: The correct neurosurgical practice started in Sudan by Dr. Abusalih 1971. Before that the neurosurgical practice in Sudan was pushed by general and orthopedic surgeons the one only used to manage few simple neurosurgical questions. Despite the lack of proper diagnostic and functioning equipment before, wide type of neurosurgical problems have happened adequately trained.Objectives: To describe the influence of diagnostic and functioning methods, the pile and quality of neurosurgical cases operated at another time and to assess the overall consequence of management.Materials and Methods: Retrospective review of the cases records was principally obtained from Dr. Abusalih book “Neurosurgery in Sudan in the seventies” besides calling some doctors the one attended that ending.Results: During the period 'tween 1970 to 1980, 2315 neurosurgical cases were seen. Of these 88% were frightening brain injuries, 3.8% intelligence tumors, 1.5% cerebrovascular malformations, 4.1% spinal cases and 2.6% extra-cranial and cranial crowd.Discussion: Most brain Cancer cases improved postoperatively (68.5%). Most using one's brain malformation cases were governed medically. For the spinal Cancer cases all benign tumors accompanied complete recovery while diseased ones showed only incomplete recovery. The extra-cranial and cranial crowd were mainly neoplastic 38.3% and inborn 31.7%. The commonest mind, spinal and extracranial public were the meningioma.Conclusion: Despite the lack of personnels and the advanced demonstrative and surgical tools, many neurosurgical questions have been sufficiently dealt with. The acknowledgment of the first steps in the development of neurosurgery will help us to better appreciate ancient times and aid in its progress from now on.
