Emotional Intelligence in University Students: Analysis of Individual Differences (Gender and Age) | Chapter 9 | Research Highlights in Language, Literature and Education Vol. 7

Emotional knowledge (EI) is a complex conceptualization widely reviewed in the literature. This research analyzed individual distinctnesses (gender and age) in EI between university scholars in Portugal. Data were obtained through an online inquiry. The sample (n = 570) was obtained through the “increase sampling” technique. EI was calculated using the languages derived from latin version of the WLEIS tool, which assesses four ranges. The researchers used the t-student test to check for dissimilarities between genders in the four dimensions of EI. Pearson's equivalence was also used to consider whether there is a friendship between age and the four ranges of EI. The results obtained signify that men obtained bigger EI scores in most ranges compared to girls. It was also found that most EI ranges are positively equated with age. These results are in line with current studies.
