Analyzing the Genotoxic Effect of Heavy Metals Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn Using Allium cepa L. | Chapter 4 | Current Topics on Chemistry and Biochemistry Vol. 9

This unit aims to analyze the cytotoxic belongings of chromium, copper, lead and metallic mineral in A. cepa root tip squash mitotic container estrangements.  Angiosperms are employed in listening studies because they are acknowledged as suitable hereditary models for detecting heavy metal-located environmental mutagens. Allium cepa (onion) has happened used to assess DNA damage in the way that chromosome aberrations and mitotic era irregularities. The root tips were treated accompanying three concentrations, viz. 5, 10 and 20 mg/100 ml of chromium, policeman, lead and zinc at range temperature for 24 h. Mitotic indications and chromosomal abnormalities were computed. These weighty metals were found to cause chromosomal deformities such as  Chromosome break, Chromosome bridge, C-formation of cells by dividing, Vagrant, Delayed Anaphase and Vagrant, Chromosome Loss, Polyploidy and Chromosome Bridge, Chromosome Loss and Loculated Nucles, Stickiness, Multipolarity and Polyploid prophase in addition to the increasing doses. Chromium and lead were raise to be more poisonous than copper and metallic mineral to the root meristem of A. cepa at a concentration of 20 mg/100 ml. The listing of cytotoxic potentials was in the descending order: lead > chromium > policeman > zinc.
