Study on Depression as a Civilization-deformed Adaptation and Defence Mechanism | Chapter 10 | New Frontiers in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 10

Depression is currently one of the most significant impediments to continued civilizational progress. Despite concerted attempts, it continues to be a significant health, social, and economic issue. We still don't know much about the aetiology of depression, and treatment is mostly symptomatic. According to the authors, depression is related to anxiety and, from an evolutionary standpoint, is an old defence mechanism. Healing used to be facilitated in intensive, short-term situations through the agency of complex psychological, biological, and social factors. Pathological changes in both the mechanism of depression and associated defence mechanisms such as the induction of an anxiety state have resulted from adverse civilizational and environmental changes. The mechanism of thanatosis, which involves chronic biological and psychosocial dysfunctions, is linked to depression. It's a method of triggering self-destructive processes in order to relieve the community of the load of a dysfunctional individual.

The authors of this paper continue to examine the arguments that support interpreting sadness as a flawed civilization-wide adaptation and defence mechanism [1].
