An Overview of Fast Dissolving Oral Thin Film | Chapter 6 | Current Aspects in Pharmaceutical Research and Development Vol. 2

Many pharmaceutical companies are moving from tablets to oral thin films that dissolve quickly (OTFs). Films combine the benefits of tablets and liquid dosage forms (precise dosing, ease of administration) (easy swallowing, rapid bioavailability). According to statistics, four out of every five patients prefer orally dissolving dose forms to solid oral dosage forms. Solid dose forms are difficult to swallow or chew for children, the elderly, bedridden patients, emetic patients, and individuals with Central Nervous System diseases. Because they are afraid of choking, many of these patients refuse to take solid dosage forms. When OTFs are placed on the tip or the floor of the tongue, saliva immediately wets them. As a result, OTFs rapidly hydrate before dissolving or dissolving to release the drug for local or systemic absorption. This technology provides a solid foundation for developing patent-free products and extending the patent lifecycle of current ones. Rapid dissolving oral thin films are used in a variety of applications, including gastroretentive and sublingual administration systems, in addition to buccal fast dissolving systems.
