Determination of Gomphrena serrata Leaf Extract as Corrosion Inhibitor and Reductant for Synthesis of Copper Nanoparticles | Chapter 1 | Challenges and Advances in Chemical Science Vol. 5

In every field of study, adopting environmentally friendly approaches is a must. The potential of Gomphrena serrata leaves as a corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in HCl medium and as a reductant was investigated in this study. Electrochemical tests, SEM, and FTIR were used to determine the adsorbed layer on the metal surface, which revealed the corrosive inhibitive activity. G. serrata was discovered to be high in polyphenols, which have strong antioxidant properties and might be used as a reducing agent in the manufacture of metal nanoparticles, according to the phytochemical investigation. As an effective inhibitor, G. serrata follows the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and acts as an anodic type inhibitor. The Cdl and Rct values of the impedance analysis confirm the creation of a thin coating on the metal surface. Copper nanoparticles and their derivatives have been utilised to treat infections, leg ulcers, and other ailments. G. serrata leaves have therapeutic characteristics, thus they were used for the manufacture of copper nanoparticles to improve them. SPR bands at 345 nm (microwave method) and 341 nm (thermostat method) validated the CuNps production. The functional groups found in G. serrata are also seen in the FTIR spectra of CuNps, indicating that it was utilised as a reducing and capping agent.
