In the Samastipur district of N.Bihar, an extensive field study and fish sampling were conducted to determine the number and distribution of fishes in flood plain wetlands, particularly mauns and chaurs. Wetlands are essential landscape elements that provide a wide range of benefits to people, fish, and animals. There were 43 species reported, divided into 31 genera, 18 families, and 8 orders. The results of the survey revealed that the Order Cypriniformes accounted for the majority of the district's fish fauna. The Cyprinidae family of fish was the most abundant (37.2 percent of all fish). The Channidae family (9.3%) and the Bagridae family (9.3%) came in second and third, respectively. In terms of conservation status, the percentage of fish in the threatened category has nearly doubled to 25.5 percent, with 2.32 percent endangered, 2.32 percent near threatened, and 20 percent vulnerable of the total collected fish species, while 58.13 percent have a status of Lower risk near threatened. Many of them are edible as well as valuable aquarium species.
