Ocular Manifestations of Diabetes Mellitus in Patients Attending Tertiary Care Hospital in Pondicherry, India | Chapter 13 | New Frontiers in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 12

Introduction: The goal of this study was to determine the ocular signs of diabetes mellitus in diabetics who presented to a Pondicherry tertiary health care centre. Aims: The study's goals are to (1) investigate socio-demographic factors in relation to DM ocular symptoms. (2) To see if there is a link between ocular signs and diabetes duration. Materials and Procedures: During the months of August and September 2017, seventy diabetic patients who presented to the Ophthalmology outpatient department were studied. The diabetics were interviewed using a predesigned questionnaire, the anterior segment was examined using a torchlight and slit lamp, and the fundus was examined using a +90D lens. Microsoft Excel and Epidata were used to record and analyse the findings, respectively. The majority of the study participants were between the ages of 41 and 70, were literate, employed, and came from a middle-income family. Diabetic retinopathy was more common in patients who had diabetes for 10 years or more, which was consistent with the findings of numerous studies in which disease duration was found to be a substantial risk factor for diabetic retinopathy, even when glycemic management was adequate. Conclusion: To delay the onset of diabetes problems, healthcare practitioners should concentrate their efforts on preventative strategies. The need of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy screening, as well as regular follow-up, cannot be overstated in order to lessen the disease's burden and its severe effects.
