A Hospital Based Study on Perception and Satisfaction Regarding Breast Feeding among Breast Feeding Mothers | Chapter 17 | New Frontiers in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 4

Background: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast feeding is a crucial technique for ensuring child health and survival, with nearly two out of every three children not exclusively breastfed and only 41% exclusively breastfed for six months. Breastfeeding pleasure is defined as "the satisfying feeling received during breastfeeding as a result of cooperation between the mother and the newborn to fulfil wishes or requirements." The goal of the study was to determine maternal breast feeding satisfaction as well as factors that influence maternal breast feeding satisfaction among moms who are breast feeding in a tertiary care hospital.

Methodology: This is a 9-month hospital-based study that took place in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College, SDUAHER, Kolar from December 2019 to August 2020. Data from a previous study was used to calculate the sample size.

The study included 270 mothers, with 82 (30.3%) having completed high school, 110 (40.7%) being between the ages of 21 and 25, 184 (68.07%) being Hindus, 125 (46.2%) belonging to the Upper middle class of Modified BG Prasad's classification 2019, 199 (73.6%) having delivered by normal delivery, and 142 (52.7%) having multiple children. Only 47 (17.4%) of 270 breast-feeding women had satisfactory knowledge, 148 (54.8%) had satisfactory attitude, and only 214 (79.3%) had satisfactory practise. Mothers who had a higher level of education, had more than one child, were a stay-at-home mom, and gave birth by normal delivery all scored better statistically.

Conclusion: Breast-feeding pleasure was influenced by education, job title, number of children, and family members, and was poor in many sectors.
