A Brief Study on Tin in the Old Russian Lead Glass | Chapter 1 | New Visions in Science and Technology Vol. 2

Lead glass, which was commonly used in mediaeval Russia, particularly during the pre-Mongolian period X-XIII cen., for the fabrication of objects, primarily bracelets, is usually accompanied with tin with exceptionally low percentage. Despite the fact that tin is not a native contaminant in lead ores, it is clearly incorporated into glass with lead. For lead glass production, slag, primarily litharge with varying tin content from pewter alloying, is proposed. Simultaneously, it is unclear if slag production can keep up with demand for lead glass manufacture.
