Analysis of Torsion Induced Giant Gyrotropy in Hexagonal CdS and CdSe Crystals | Chapter 2 | Advanced Aspects of Engineering Research Vol. 16

Gyrotropy is "weak" in hexagonal CdS and CdSe crystals with symmetry C6v. A strong gyrotropic effect is seen in CdS and CdSe crystals deformed by a torsional moment guided along the optical axis. The instrument utilised is the Polarizer-Crystal-Analyzer (P-C-A). The device (P–C–A) with crossed P and A with an undeformed CdS or CdSe crystal does not allow light to pass through. Because of the torsion, the crystal's symmetry is decreased to C6, and it gains gyrotropic characteristics. The gadget (P-C-A) starts to miss light when the CdS or CdSe crystal is distorted. According to our research, for broad values of the torsional moments, the intensity of the light that went through the structure (P–C-A) with deformed CdS or CdSe crystal is 85-90 percent of the incident light intensity.
