Application of Nano-doped Zinc Oxide on the Retina of Diabetic Rats as Protective agent against Oxidative Stress | Chapter 10 | Current Innovations in Medicine and Medical Science vol. 1

 The main contributor to the onset of diabetic retinopathy (DR) is oxidative stress. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine if zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) doped with fluorine (F: ZnO) and chlorine (Cl: ZnO) had any protective effects against retinal oxidative stress in diabetic rats. Cl: ZnO and F: ZnO were each given an FTIR, X-ray, SEM, and BET characterisation. Measurements were made of sAST, sALT, insulin, and blood sugar. Additionally, TBA in the liver and retina as well as GSH in the retina were evaluated. The average particle size of Cl: ZnO and F: ZnO, according to TEM results, is 59.3 nm and 17.7 nm, respectively. Serum insulin was decreased and serum glucose was increased significantly (p ≤ 0.05) and depleted both retinal GST and retinal and liver TBA contents 3 days after treatment with STZ compared to other groups. Low and high doses of STZ + Cl: ZnO and STZ + F: ZnO in STZ-administered animals, ZnO therapy decreased serum glucose levels, reversed the depletion effect on retinal GSH levels; and decreased spikes in TBA levels in the livers and retinas. The findings look at the useful effects of a high dose of Cl: ZnO and F: ZnO in preventing retinal damage in diabetic rats and oxidative stress in hyperglycemia.
