Two significant strands formed the foundation of visual and spatial attention research from the late 20th century to the present. One of them is Michael I. Posner's research, which makes use of the spatial cueing method. In this chapter, I provide my findings regarding the independence of these two aspects of spatial attention as well as the effect of cue length on the facilitation effect and IOR. First, we sought to clarify the relationship between cue duration and IOR and facilitation effect. The independence between the facilitation effect and IOR was the second goal. The correlations between the size of the facilitation effect and that of IOR were looked at in order to make this argument clearer. The findings of Experiment 1 and 2 supported the idea that the facilitation effect and IOR are likely impacted by different mechanisms and are dissociable factors (both stimulus attributes and participant traits).
