The goal of this work was to create functionalized ionic liquids with long carbon chains starting with imidazole in order to boost their lipophilicity. Starting with imidazole 1, the synthesis of a few ionic liquids (ILs) 3 a–b is detailed. Under microwave irradiation, the starting material is transformed into N-alkyl imidazole (1a-b), which then reacts with allylbromide to produce functionalized N-alkyl, N'-allyl imidazolium bromide (2a-b). The target compounds 3 a-b are obtained in good yields by hydroboration, followed by methanolysis and acid hydrolysis when applied to them. We were able to create some functionalized acid ionic liquids with high yield using microwave irradiation as opposed to the traditional method, skipping the lengthy reaction period and potential for product deterioration.
