The purpose of this essay is to apply Armstrong's theory of fluid "post-modern" "neo-tribes" to the West Perth cheerleaders of 1984–1986 and make the necessary, theoretically sound conclusions from it. Since 1885, West Perth FC has participated in the Perth-based Western Australian Football League (WAFL) competition as a founding member. The fast collapse of the cheer squad early in the 1986 season without anybody officially ending it is one of the many characteristics of our cheer squad's culture and members' behaviours that I feel the anthropological approach is able to explain. Theoretically, Marsh's description of "aggro" as "the illusion of violence" seems to accurately characterise and explain the aggressive posturing but otherwise peaceful behaviour of our West Perth cheerleaders. It also explains why our group's members silently left after the Swan Districts fans' surrender (and their team's victory) at Bassendean Oval in 1985. This behaviour was partially inadvertent. They completely imposed Swan Districts fan control over every square centimetre of Bassendean Oval without using a single punch.
