Role of an Orthodontist in Managing Social Stigma Due to Malocclusion | Chapter 12 | Current Practice in Medical Science Vol. 8

The dental disease known as malocclusion, or abnormality of the teeth beyond what is considered normal, affects thousands of people worldwide yet is completely curable and treatable. Malocclusion is a frequent problem, and literature on its orthodontic repair is extensive. It is well recognised that one's physical appearance can undermine one's confidence. The way one looks and how their teeth look are important factors in defining their sense of value. Low self-esteem is frequently caused by poor face aesthetics, especially in a child's early development. Understanding the emotional impact and societal stigma associated with malocclusion, how it impacts our society, and how orthodontists can help their patients overcome this stigma are the main goals of this study.
