Determining the Analgesic Activity of Asoka – Saraca asoca (Roxb.) de Wilde | Chapter 5 | Current Practice in Medical Science Vol. 11

In order to confirm the analgesic properties of kashaya of stem bark of Asoka, Saraca asoca (Roxb.) de Wilde, a reverse pharmacological investigation has been conducted. The medication Asoka - Saraca asoca (Roxb.) de Wilde - is included under the Vedanasthapana Mahakashaya in Acharya Charaka's Shatvirechana Shatasriteeya. The analgesic effects of drugs have been discussed in classical literature. In Udavartha, it is extensively used as arishta to manage various anila vedana. Female Wistar Albino rats were used to test the analgesic activity utilising the acetic acid-induced writhing method. A 0.4ml/200g b.wt. intraperitoneal injection of 0.25% v/v acetic acid in normal saline was used to diagnose the writhing syndrome. Rats will get the test drug and the standard dose 60 minutes before receiving an acetic acid injection. The percentage of suppression of writhing is used to measure analgesic activity. The analgesic study revealed significant differences between the effective and doubly effective doses of the test medication and the control. Thus, it supports the kashaya of Saraca asoca (Roxb.) de Wilde's stem bark's analgesic qualities.
