The essay examined the Nigerian government's use of conflict management techniques to resolve the crises in Odi and the wider Niger Delta region of Nigeria. To ascertain which of these two conflict resolution strategies—the use of force or the granting of amnesty—worked better for Nigeria, the study did a thorough examination of the relevant literature. It has been observed that using force to settle disputes in the Niger Delta always makes the problem worse. On the other hand, the granting of amnesty offered a better framework for managing conflicts and has the potential to end the conflicts in the Niger Delta if pursued actively and comprehensively. The main recommendations were that: the root cause(s) of conflicts should be well established in order to know the strategies to use in managing it; conflict managers should not rush and use force to manage any conflict; there should always be active channels for effective communication between the conflicting parties; and a fair, just socio-political environment should always be created to prevent the emergence of conflict. Finally, rather than waiting until there is a breakdown in law and order, leaders should always be proactive in resolving conflicts through good communication and dialogue.
