Determining the Relationship between Platelet Indices and Microvascular Complications in Type 2 Diabetic Patients | Chapter 22 | Recent Developments in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 6

Diabetes is a prevalent metabolic illness that affects the entire world's population and causes a large amount of morbidity and mortality, owing to its micro- and macrovascular consequences. The link between platelet indices such as mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, plateletcrit, and total platelet count in diabetic patients with and without microvascular issues is investigated in this study. Until 2019, this review of the literature was conducted utilising a public access website such as PubMed, Google Scholar, or Medline databases. Patients with macrovascular issues and those using drugs that alter platelet indices were the main exclusion criteria in the investigations. These articles were all scrutinised. Platelet indices such as mean platelet volume and platelet distribution width were significantly higher in those with microvascular complications, especially Diabetic Nephropathy and Diabetic Retinopathy, when compared to those without. Changes in platelet indices were found to be significantly associated to diabetic microvascular issues. As a result, these characteristics can be used to track and predict the risk of microvascular complications.
