Study on Comedy Films of Malaysian Studio Era: An Approach to Social Culture Criticism | Chapter 4 | Selected Topics in Humanities and Social Sciences Vol. 5

Because it is built on works that remark on and critique social and political concerns that have the potential to be depicted as serious, comedy is frequently a serious matter. In the meantime, film is a significant cultural practise and institution. The focus of this study is on comedic films as a form of social criticism. As a result, the goal of this study is to see how effective comedy films are as a form of criticism. This research's insight was obtained through a qualitative research design. The film focuses on the studio era of Malaysian cinema. It is based on the premise of humour as social culture critiques with the ability to be taken seriously. The purpose of this research is to investigate and analyse the role of Malaysian Studio Era comedic films in social culture criticism. In terms of the findings, they reveal that the comedy genre does act as a ‘agency' of meaning to a degree that is heavily influenced by socio-culture. Thus, social culture criticisms that have the ability to be presented as serious and are considered as having the potential to criticise cultural discourses by highlighting their status as fiction are viewed as having the potential to criticise cultural discourses.
