Study on Cochlear Implants (CIs) and Plasticity of the Auditory System | Chapter 5 | New Frontiers in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 12

In severe to profound hearing loss, cochlear implants (CIs) are a very successful therapy. The outcome of CIs, on the other hand, varies greatly among cochlear implantees. Despite the fact that peripheral elements play a vital role, central factors are important contributors to success. The wide range of CI results could be attributed to auditory plasticity. The right auditory inputs, whether natural or electronic, are critical for central auditory development. Hearing loss has a significant influence on central auditory function, whereas hearing restoration with CIs has a favourable central impact and allows for proper communication and perception.
