Message from the SUN on 28th August 1859 | Chapter 6 | Research Trends and Challenges in Physical Science Vol. 1

The huge spectral auroral phenomenon of 1859 that affected the Earth and revealed the link between the magnetic and electrical effects is referred to as the "Message from the SUN 28th August 1859."

The solar IMF is responsible for the Northern and Southern Lights. Gill's Electronic Theory of Magnetism, published in 1964, describes how the solar IMF separates into negative and positive electric energy components when it approaches the Earth's magnetosphere, causing the equally bright Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis.

With examples, it will be taught why the Northern and Southern lights do not reach all the way to the Earth's magnetic poles and why they are brighter at night. The ‘terrella' experiments of Kristian Birkeland from 1900 to 1916 are detailed in greater detail.

The solar source of the necessary electrical seeding of the Earth's magnetic poles for the geomagnetic dynamo to function and build its magnetosphere is depicted.

Some applications for harnessing the solar electrical energy that reaches the Earth are provided, as well as dot product equations to support these applications without the requirement for Henrik Lorentz's 1893 cross products.

Gill's electronic theory of magnetism, published in 1964, explains everything above and should take the place of Maxwell's previous dipole theory of magnetism, published in 1873.
