Determining the Relative Difficulty of English Writings by Fuzzy Reasoning and Its Application to Selecting Teaching Materials | Chapter 1 | Modern Perspectives in Language, Literature and Education Vol. 9

TIME and Newsweek's writing styles are assessed using a thoroughly developed linguistic approach. These two news periodicals were picked because of their enormous appeal. The analyses revealed that word and character frequency curves had stayed unchanged for the past 60 years. The frequency curves were also determined to have distinct inflection points that can be utilised to define the genre of English texts. Counting the percentage of compulsory vocabulary for junior high and high school pupils in Japan can be used to estimate the relative complexity of English works using fuzzy reasoning. This is an experimental paper with the goal of finding a clue to evaluate the degree of difficulty by using fuzzy rules on frequency data. Fuzzy rules are created using the characteristics of characteristic curves. It would be an excellent index to consult when selecting textbooks or additional readers.
