Another Alternative to Reduce the Unemployment: Formalization of Informal Sector Entrepreneurship in Djibouti | Chapter 6 | Modern Perspectives in Economics, Business and Management Vol. 8

The primary goal of this study is to harmonise the classification of economic activity in Djibouti with worldwide classifications. The data used in this study comes from the Djibouti National Security Fund (DNSF) and the Djibouti Chamber of Commerce (DCC). The unified classification offers for better visibility when it comes to employment creation in the business sector, as well as a single-point of contact. The new classification enables a comparison between informal and formal economic activity to be made. Using this new method, we can also estimate the number of jobs produced in the informal economy. According to our new methodology, the informal sector employs at least 790 people and has at least 178 businesses. These 790 informal jobs can be converted to official jobs. We classified unemployed people and categorised economic activities that belong in the illicit sector in the previous work. Then, we calculated that there are at least 15670 job openings, allowing for a 6 percent reduction in unemployment. This contribution will help to reduce unemployment in Djibouti and offer policymakers in the Republic of Djibouti with vital information.
