Endogenous phytohormones such as auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, brassinosteroids, and abscisic acid have been contained in microalgae. Crop production (biostimulants and biofertilisers), food and feed, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and biofuel production all have a rising market for microalgal-derived biomolecules. Biorefinery is a systematic method for fractionating all biocompositions of microalgal biomass for these particular applications. Methanol residue from microalgal lipid extraction generally produces a wide range of bioactive compounds, including phytohormones, which have been shown to boost crop seed germination and plant growth (root length, plant height, branch, leave and flower increase). Despite some promising findings in the use of microalgal products as fertilisers, biostimulants, and plant growth regulators, these studies lacked analytical techniques for characterization of these algal products. The profile and content of algal products-derived biomolecules that catalyse crop seed germination and plant growth should be explained in order to provide a basic understanding and guide for specific agricultural applications. This book chapter aims to depict the development of various phytohormones in the worlds of microalgae, cyanobacteria, and algae. Furthermore, this report presents the state-of-the-art of recent advanced techniques for assessing phytohormones in microalgae, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Furthermore, the general outlook of algal phytohormones applications in microalgae-based biorefinery is discussed.
