Shear Strength Properties, and Bearing Capacity of Coastal Plain Sands in Uyo Metropolis, Akwa-Ibom State, Southeastern Nigeria| Chapter 9 | Techniques and Innovation in Engineering Research Vol. 4

The significance capacity of the soil inside Uyo metropolis in Southeastern state of Akwa Ibom was examined in this study. The soil belongs to Coastal Plain Sand frequently called the Benin Formation in the the earth's features of Niger Delta. Both Field and Laboratory methods were working in the study. The field method involved Cone Penetration Test (CPT) with a 2.5 heap Guada Dutch cone penetrometer, and the Light burden penetrometer LRS 10. For the CPT, depth of case was refusal wisdom which changes from about 9.0 m to 20.0 m. The depth of examination for the LRS 10 was not more than 6.0 m. The direct limit the LRS 10 evaluates is the relative density. Soil ringing with the LRS 10 determined for all the sites a ‘loose to medium’ regularity. No dense or very thick stratum was met. The Laboratory method working was the direct shear box decision of cohesive possessions and angle of shearing resistance of the soil, namely the C- ∅ property. The union vary very widely; accompanying a value ranging from a nothing to 54 kN/m2. The angle of shearing resistance ranges from 8∘ to 30.7∘, accompanying more than ninety allotment falling beneath 28∘, indicating a well compressible soil that is compulsive local shear disappointment. Bearing capacities is as reduced as 100.93 kN/m2 and as high as 571.1 kN/m2. Settlement guide safe posture pressure estimated from CPT dossier ranged from 1.21 cm to 3.89 cm. while that from workshop gives lesser principles, thereby making that from the field worth conservative.
