Tobacco use in Medical College Students and Its Effect on their Attitudes and Practices | Chapter 16 | Current Practice in Medical Science Vol. 5

The goal of this chapter is to examine tobacco usage prevalence, attitudes against it, and programs for quitting smoking. Armed Forces Medical Colleges were the subject of a cross-sectional study employing a self-administered, anonymous questionnaire based on the Global Health Professions Student Survey (GHPSS). Data on various variables were collected and analyzed using the GHPSS questionnaire. 107 students in all took part in the study. Support for a smoking ban in public places and abstinence from smoking are significantly correlated. Interventions aimed at aspiring health care professionals can aid the war on tobacco. Active interventions should be used to treat the smoking issues among medical students. Skills-based medical school courses should include and promote the development of effective smoking cessation skills.
